For External Users: Multi-Factor Authentication
Starting Friday, August 14, 2026
Starting August 14, 2026, all users of the University Library who are not members of the Hochschule Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences (HSD) will only be able to log in to their library account using multi-factor authentication (MFA).
This measure will enhance the protection of your personal information and your library account.
What is multi-factor authentication?
Until now, a username and (one-time) password were all that was needed to log in to your library account. In the future, you will also need a second form of identification.
You can then log in using:
- Your username and password
- Additional confirmation via an authentication device
Even if a password were to fall into the wrong hands, your account would still be protected.
What methods can be used?
The following methods are available for multi-factor authentication:
- Microsoft Authenticator (recommended): The free Microsoft Authenticator app can be installed on smartphones and tablets. When logging in to your library account, you'll confirm your identity using the app.
- TOTP device or TOTP app: Alternatively, you can use a device or app that generates one-time codes (TOTP). With this method, you enter a code that is valid for a limited time each time you log in.
What should you do now?
Please set up one of the authentication methods listed above well in advance of August 14, 2026. After that date, you will no longer be able to log in to your library account without multi-factor authentication.
