In what direction is the University Library evolving? Where will we be active in the future?

To ensure that, in the years ahead, we continue to meet all professional, structural, personnel, and infrastructural requirements as the University Library of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, we are currently addressing our strategic development goals through numerous projects.

RDM.HSD

Project Status: Ongoing, since December 2023

Project Description:
For researchers, the topic of research data management (RDM) becomes relevant - at the very latest - when applying for third-party funding. Many funding agencies (e.g., the DFG and the EU), as well as academic journal publishers and professional societies, expect researchers to provide details regarding RDM for their planned projects at the time of application. Furthermore, sustainable RDM offers benefits for the researchers themselves as well as for the wider scientific community.

The University Library of the Hochschule Düsseldorf of Applied Sciences positions itself as a service partner for researchers, faculty, and students in the field of Research Data Management (RDM). Building upon a project conducted under the *FDMScouts.nrw* funding initiative, the existing service portfolio is to be further developed and expanded to incorporate additional aspects, with the aim of establishing comprehensive RDM support services at HSD. In addition to measures supporting research, specific needs have been identified within the realms of study and teaching; these will be examined in greater depth in the follow-up project. These areas include RDM as an integral component of academic work, inquiry-based learning, and research-oriented teaching seminars. Furthermore, the University Library actively participates in RDM-related initiatives at both the state (NRW) and national levels.

State Initiative openaccess.nrw

Project Status: Ongoing, since April 2022
Consortium Lead: University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE)

Project Description:
The state initiative supports higher education institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia in establishing innovative and needs-oriented services, and furthermore provides a forum for state-wide discourse and positioning regarding Open Access.

The state initiative serves as a service facility for higher education institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia. The project targets university research departments, strategic decision-makers, infrastructure facilities, and all stakeholders within the field of Open Access (including libraries, Open Access officers, etc.).

The project consortium consists of universities, universities of applied sciences, art academies, and music conservatories in North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as the University Library Centre (hbz). The consortium is led by the University of Duisburg-Essen.

The University Library of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences participates as a consortium partner in the state initiative openaccess.nrw.
Through its active participation in the consortium, the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences aims to contribute the perspective and needs of a University of Applied Sciences to the project, as well as to contribute to the concrete further development of Open Access.

About the Project:

Introduction and Institutionalization of a Central Open Access Publication Fund

Projekt Status: Ongoing, since Juni 2023

Project Description:
Since mid-2023, Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences has maintained an Open Access Publication Fund. This fund serves to cover the costs associated with Open Access publications. The initial funding is provided jointly by the University Library and the Department of Research & Transfer. To expand the scope of this support, a successful grant application for Open Access publication funding was submitted to the German Research Foundation (DFG).
Establishing a publication fund represents a crucial step toward enhancing cost transparency in scholarly publishing and building the necessary administrative infrastructure. During a two-year pilot phase, the primary objective is to centrally record data - specifically the volume, costs, funding contexts, and available resources - pertaining to publications by researchers, the costs of which typically arise in a decentralized manner. In collaboration with the academic departments and the university administration, a concept for the permanent institutionalization of the publication fund is being developed to ensure that centralized, long-term support for Open Access publications remains available beyond 2026.

The Library as a "Third Place"

Projektstatus: laufend, seit Januar 2024

Project Description:
The project aims to establish the university library as a "third place" - a space offering attractive and accessible learning and working environments tailored to the diverse needs of its users. Through the renovation of existing areas, the creation of new spaces, and a reduction in print media holdings, room is being made for modern learning and working environments. The spaces thus vacated are being strategically repurposed to accommodate additional study and workspaces.
Furthermore, digitalization efforts are being advanced to facilitate the transition from traditional service and information desks to a modern "InfoPoint," thereby providing users with contemporary access to information.

Digitalization

Project Status: Ongoing
Cooperation Partner: Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences

Project Description:
Digitalization is not a project that, once initiated, follows a predetermined course with foreseeable milestones. Rather, it is a continuous process of change that takes into account societal shifts and technological advancements, identifies new requirements, and integrates these into the offerings and services of a modern library.

Innovations and changes implemented by the University Library in the context of digitalization.

Introduction of an E-Archive

Project Status: Ongoing, since May 2024
Cooperation Partner: University Administration

Project Description:
The University Archive preserves the archival-worthy analog and digital records and objects of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences - those possessing lasting value for science and research, historical-political education, legislation, jurisprudence, institutions, or third parties. As part of the "E-Government@HSD" program, the "E-Archive" project focuses on the preservation and archiving of digital records. The project comprises several work packages.
The revision of the Records Management Policy defines the legal framework for the appraisal and disposal of university records following the expiration of statutory retention periods, thereby ensuring compliance with legal regulations.
Archival software is being introduced to facilitate the arrangement, description and retrieval of archival materials; this software will simultaneously enable access to content stored within the digital long-term archive.
The DiPS.kommunal infrastructure has been designated as the digital long-term archive solution. in addition to the procurement and configuration of a dedicated client instance, it is necessary to establish an interface with the d3.documents document management system in order to transfer archival-worthy records into the DiPS.kommunal long-term archive.
