The End of EBC - What Now?

Access:

Direct link to the database: Ebook Central (EBC)

Searching and reading are available for up to 5 minutes without logging in; after that, access requires Shibboleth login using your HSD ID.

Therefore, EBC cannot be used by external users.

Contents:

EBC is an e-book portal from ProQuest.
It includes approximately 2,400 full-text academic books from renowned academic publishers across all disciplines, as well as approximately 46,000 open-access titles.

The e-books are available for immediate use (marked in green). They can also be searched for in the BIB’s Katalog Plus.

Terms of Use:

At EBC, e-books are borrowed via the Digital Lending Service using Adobe Digital Editions.
This allows you to borrow the e-book for one week (7 days). You may renew the loan as often as you like.

After logging in via Shibboleth and selecting “Full Download,” the e-book will be available on your personal virtual bookshelf until the digital loan period expires. Due to special copy protection (Digital Rights Management = DRM), the file can no longer be opened after this point. On your virtual bookshelf, you can see at any time when the book is set to “expire".

It is not possible to extend the loan period, but you can renew the loan, meaning each book can be borrowed multiple times.
However, highlights, bookmarks, and comments are tied to the file. They will be lost when you borrow the book again and receive a new file.

Search options: Full-text search across the entire collection of available content

File formats: PDF, EPUB

Printing: By page or by chapter; up to 40% of an e-book per borrowing day

Copying/saving: Text and images by page; up to 20% of the e-book per borrowing day

Download: Available only via digital lending using Adobe Digital Editions (free for Windows; not available for Linux). For use on Linux systems, only chapter-by-chapter downloads are available.

Concurrent users: depend on the license purchased for the e-book; generally, there is no limit on the number of concurrent users.
For licenses limited to up to three concurrent users, after a digital loan, the next user can generally access the book again after 7 days.
