DOI, ISBN, and ISSN Assignment

The University Library assists members of Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences with the assignment of DOIs, ISBNs, and ISSNs.

These persistent identifiers make your publications uniquely identifiable, thereby making them easier to find and cite - regardless of whether they are online or print media.

DOI – Digital Object Identifier

A DOI is a permanent, globally unique identifier for digital objects such as electronic publications or research data. It guarantees:

  • Reliable citability

  • Stable linking and discoverability on the web

  • Improved international visibility for your research
DOIs are only issued for new publications in the HSD institutional repository (HSDopus). This service is free of charge.

Please use the online form or contact us at opus.bibliothek@hs-duesseldorf.de.

ISBN – International Standard Book Number

The ISBN uniquely identifies book publications - whether printed or digital. Online editions are also assigned their own ISBN.

You can request an ISBN free of charge: Please contact us at beschaffung.bibliothek@hs-duesseldorf.de.

For print publications, we ask that you provide six complimentary copies for archiving and to fulfill the legal deposit requirement.

These are distributed as follows:

For this, we also need the following information from you:

  • what the retail price of the publication will be
  • where you can request or purchase copies

ISSN – International Standard Serial Number

For ongoing publications such as book series or journals, we are happy to apply for an ISSN on your behalf through the ISSN Center Germany.

Online journals can also be assigned their own ISSN. Print and digital editions are assigned different ISSNs, even if they share the same title.

You can apply for an ISSN free of charge: Contact us at beschaffung.bibliothek@hs-duesseldorf.de. Please provide the title and - for online publications - the parent URL. Applications are typically processed within 10 days.

There is also a persistent identifier for individuals: the ORCID iD. This allows your research to be uniquely linked to you. And registration is free.

Not sure whether your publication qualifies for a DOI, an ISBN, or an ISSN? We are happy to provide individual advice during our service hours:
