Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences has a publication fund. This fund can be used to refund a proportion of the costs
associated with open-access articles.
Open Access aims to make scholarly literature freely available to the public. Full-text articles should be legally accessible to scholars, researchers, and other interested parties, who should be able to read, download, copy, print, and share them. This does not preclude authors from retaining rights and control over their own work.
There are various strategies for implementing open access. The main difference usually lies in the funding model, which gives rise to the following options. Different open-access publication routes allow you to publish your work under the terms you prefer and make it available to the public.
Open Access Hybrid
In so-called hybrid journals, authors have the option of publishing their work as closed access or open access. If you choose to publish as open access, open access publication fees will apply. Under the
DEAL initiative, the HSD has agreements with Springer Nature and Wiley for such publications in journals from both publishers. A separate transformation agreement is in place with the publisher Hogrefe.
Other publishers tend to advise against this approach due to the risk of double payment for articles (Double Dipping).

Open Access Diamant
This term refers to the (initial) publication of a work in which the journal does not charge you, as the author, any publication fees (APCs) for its production and distribution.
The “Directory of Open Access Journals” (doaj.org) is a directory that lists journals that publish in accordance with the principles of open access.

Open Access Gold
Open Access Gold refers to the initial publication of a work in a so-called open-access journal.
Unlike Open Access Diamond, the production and provision of an article incur costs of varying amounts. The business model that has become established involves the collection of publication fees (Article Processing Charges, APCs). These fees are paid by the authors themselves.

Closed Access & Open Access Green
Closed Access refers to the opposite of Open Access. If you, as an author, have published via Closed Access, you often have the option of secondary publication. So-called “Green Open Access” allows you to publish your works - whether they have already been published via Closed Access or are scheduled to be published that way - in parallel as secondary publications in Open Access repositories.
The point at which a publisher permits secondary publication varies. You may need to take into account a moving wall or embargo periods. You can find details on this in your publishing contract or on the journal’s website.
To implement secondary publication, we recommend using a subject-specific repository or the HSD’s institutional repository (HSDopus).

The University Library supports you - as scholars, researchers, and authors at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences - both through individual consultation before and during your publication project and by providing and managing the university’s institutional repository (HSDopus). As part of the publication process, we also assist you with the
assignment of identifiers.
The University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf has also concluded various transformation agreements through the University Library for publishing with publishers. In some cases, this means that publishing in the form of Open Access Gold is free of charge.
